Program Overview
To build a “People-Centered” and “Sustainable Society” has become the world’s greatest consensus. Governments worldwide are promoting the “Sustainable Development Goals” (SDGs) through United Nations initiatives. Businesses are implementing corporate social responsibility (CSR) through Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices. Universities, in collaboration with local communities and industries, are focusing on University Social Responsibility (USR) to contribute to sustainable development. These efforts respond to the call for sustainable development goals. At the same time, due to the increasing frequency and severity of natural and man-made disasters, enhancing disaster preparedness and resilience across all levels of society is crucial for sustainable development. Therefore, government agencies, businesses, and NGOs need more professionals skilled in sustainability and disaster resilience.
To address this need, Tzu Chi University has combined its diverse academic strengths and research capabilities, along with the Tzu Chi Foundation’s extensive experience in global disaster relief and sustainable development. In 2023, the university established the “Master’s Program in Sustainability and Disaster Management,” providing a multidisciplinary and forward-thinking platform for university graduates and the public to further their education.
This program integrates two main areas: “Sustainable Development” and “Disaster Health Management,” with a focus on building resilience. The curriculum covers topics such as net-zero carbon emissions, sustainable design, green building, social solidarity economy, resilient communities, technology and media applications, disaster geography, disaster education, post-disaster social work, disaster psychology, disaster public health, and disaster medical and nursing care. Additionally, the program offers internship opportunities within the Tzu Chi system both domestically and internationally. Through interdisciplinary learning and practical fieldwork, the program helps students integrate theoretical knowledge with practical skills.
